  • Pavement Engineering – Highways and Airports

    SES as Consultants specializes in all aspects of pavement consulting, including design, management, maintenance, and rehabilitation. SES in association with its global partners offers a wide range of pavement consulting engineering services, including pavement design and rehabilitation, pavement deflection testing and analysis, profiling measurements, pavement distress surveys, friction surveys and pavement management system installations.     • Pavement Design and Rehabilitation

      The end result of runway, taxiway, apron, highway or parking lot design should be pavements that are safe, structurally adequate and maintenance free. SES offers a complete range of pavement analysis and design services for both detailed project / network level analysis for highways, airports and parking lots. We use state-of-the-art evaluation, analysis and design techniques to study the behavior of airfield and highway pavements. Pavement rehabilitation alternatives development requires a thorough knowledge of the existing design methodologies, and the practical experience to ensure their proper application.       Field Data Collection

    • Pavement Evaluation and Technology

      Pavements are evaluated to assess surface operational condition and structural integrity, and to estimate pavement layer material strengths, allowable loads and remaining useful life. SES's comprehensive pavement evaluations provide insight into how the pavement is performing, what is causing it to deteriorate, and what additional information is needed to determine most appropriate repair or rehabilitation. SES is experienced in all methods of pavement condition assessment, including visual inspections, using pavement condition index. For structural evaluation Nondestructive Deflection Testing (NDT) is adopted using Benkelman Beam Deflection (BBD) or Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD). SES also performs other methods of testing including coring, boring, material testing, dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) testing, roughness measurements, ground penetrating radar (GPR) testing, skid measurements, and other techniques to evaluate pavement condition.
      Functional Evaluation
      SES performs visual condition surveys, which entail inspecting the pavement surface for both structural and functional distresses and deterioration. Visual condition surveys provide data for both network-level pavement management systems and project-level rehabilitation studies. SES performs both manual and automated pavement condition surveys, using Pavement Condition Index (PCI) method developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
      Structural Evaluation
      Nondestructive Deflection Testing (NDT) is an integral part of the pavement evaluation, design and management programs used by engineers today. Large amount of data is collected using NDT without effecting the condition of pavement. The most common method of NDT is Benkelman Beam Deflection (BBD) or the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD). The FWD is a device capable of applying dynamic loads to the pavement surface, similar in magnitude and duration to that of a single heavy moving wheel load. The response of the pavement system is measured in terms of vertical deformation, or deflection, over a given area using seismometers.

      Pavement roughness is generally defined as an expression of irregularities in the pavement surface that adversely affect the ride quality of a vehicle (and thus the user).  Roughness is an important pavement characteristic because it affects not only ride quality but also vehicle delay costs, fuel consumption and maintenance costs.  The international roughness index (IRI) was developed by the World Bank in the IRI is used to define a characteristic of the longitudinal profile of a traveled wheeltrack and constitutes a standardized roughness measurement.  The commonly recommended units are meters per kilometer (m/km) or millimeters per meter (mm/m). SES offers its services to measure roughness for airports and highways using both through response type equipments or other laser profiling devices.





      SES measures surface friction changes due to weathering, high usage, aging, and contaminants such as rubber build-up in the touchdown zones in airfield using continuous friction measuring equipment for highways and airports.

    • Pavement Management System (PMS)

      A Pavement Maintenance Management System provides a systematic objective and consistent procedure to evaluate existing and future pavement condition. It provides a means to manage pavement maintenance expenditure more economically and efficiently. An effective pavement maintenance management program is one that details the procedures to be followed in order to assure that proper pavement maintenance, where, major, local and global are performed in the right location and right time.
      SES PMS is an effective tool to quantify current pavement condition, anticipate future problems, as well as select and schedule the best maintenance and rehabilitation (M & R) strategy at the appropriate time. SES in association with global partners can develop customized software with the combination of technologically advanced pavement evaluation and management software, which can provide the both highway and aviation authorities with the necessary tools to maximize pavement condition while minimizing costs and minimal traffic disruption. SES in addition to PMS can also offer its services for Asset Management.

    • Video Distress Survey

      Video Distress Survey is an integral part of Pavement Management Systems (PMS). The pavement surface can be filmed quickly and efficiently, and the collected data can be processed utilizing the PCI method. The filming process can be done in conjunction with Nondestructive Deflection Testing (NDT), thus allowing the collection of both structural as well as visual distresses of a pavement section. SES in association with global partners provides state of art technology utilizes standardized picture format files for video storage. Information detailing each recorded frame is stored in a database enabling quick and accurate retrieval for additional analysis or future referral. SES can provide the resources required to complete all phases of PMS implementation.
