Pavement Design and Rehabilitation The end result of runway, taxiway, apron, highway or parking lot design should be pavements that are safe, structurally adequate and maintenance free. SES offers a complete range of pavement analysis and design services for both detailed project / network level analysis for highways, airports and parking lots. We use state-of-the-art evaluation, analysis and design techniques to study the behavior of airfield and highway pavements. Pavement rehabilitation alternatives development requires a thorough knowledge of the existing design methodologies, and the practical experience to ensure their proper application. SES along with its global partners can successfully develop and implement the rehabilitation design strategies for airports and highways.

SES has trained engineers and technicians to collect accurate and reliable field data.

Pavement Evaluation and Technology Pavements are evaluated to assess surface operational condition and structural integrity, and to estimate pavement layer material strengths, allowable loads and remaining useful life. SES's comprehensive pavement evaluations provide insight into how the pavement is performing, what is causing it to deteriorate, and what additional information is needed to determine most appropriate repair or rehabilitation. SES is experienced in all methods of pavement condition assessment, including visual inspections, using pavement condition index. For structural evaluation Nondestructive Deflection Testing (NDT) is adopted using Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD). SES also performs other methods of testing including coring, boring, material testing, dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) testing, roughness measurements, ground penetrating radar (GPR)
testing, skid measurements, and other techniques to evaluate pavement condition.

Functional Evaluation SES performs visual condition surveys, which entail inspecting the pavement surface for both structural and functional distresses and deterioration. Visual condition surveys provide data for both network-level pavement management systems and project-level rehabilitation studies. SES performs both manual and automated pavement condition surveys, using Pavement Condition Index (PCI) method developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers

Structural Evaluation Nondestructive Deflection Testing (NDT) is an integral part of the pavement evaluation, design and management programs used by engineers today. Large amount of data is collected using NDT without effecting the condition of pavement. The most common method of NDT is the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD). The FWD is a device capable of applying dynamic loads to the pavement surface, similar in magnitude and duration to that of a single heavy moving wheel load. The response of the pavement system is measured in terms of vertical deformation, or deflection, over a given area using seismometers.

Pavement roughness is generally defined as an expression of irregularities in the pavement surface that adversely affect the ride quality of a vehicle (and thus the user). Roughness is an important pavement characteristic because it affects not only ride quality but also vehicle delay costs, fuel consumption and maintenance costs. The international roughness index (IRI) was developed by the World Bank in the IRI is used to define a characteristic of the longitudinal profile of a traveled wheeltrack and constitutes a standardized roughness measurement. The commonly recommended units are meters per kilometer (m/km) or millimeters per meter (mm/m). SES offers its services to measure roughness for airports and highways using both through response type equipments or other laser profiling devices.

SES measures surface friction changes due to weathering, high usage, aging, and contaminants such as rubber build-up in the touchdown zones in airfield using continuous friction measuring equipment for highways and airports.
